Grand Lake O' The Cherokees Watershed Alliance Foundation
Our Purpose
OUR PURPOSE: Our Foundation focuses on preserving, protecting and improving water quality within the Grand Lake O' The Cherokees watershed. Tributary rivers and streams flow into the watershed from parts of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

THE KEY: This citizen-based organization works cooperatively with local, state and federal government organizations; the Grand River Dam Authority; businesses; citizens; tribal entities; and other organizations dedicated to improving water quality.

STAKEHOLDERS: It's recognized the watershed has a vast range of stakeholders who both benefit from excellent water quality and/or influence the water quality. The Foundation will serve as a means and method for watershed stakeholders to actively participate in matters affecting water quality.

EDUCATION: The Foundation will provide water quality related training and education to the public.

PARTNERSHIP: Other water quality organizations are and will be established within the Grand Lake watershed. The Foundation will partner with organizations having similar including other Not For Profit organizations.

SCIENTIFIC: The collection and analysis of water related data is important to water quality management. The Foundation is committed to work with the scientific community and governmental organizations.

FUNDING: The funding sources to the Foundation include the following:

  • Grants from private non-profit organizations
  • Contribution from businesses and citizens
  • Grants from state and federal governmental organizations

FOUNDATION OBJECTIVES: Some examples of Foundation objectives are:

  • Coordinate, assist, and possibly draft a Watershed Improvement Plan and assist in its implementation
  • Mobilize communities and governments to improve wastewater treatment and to improve storm water run-off control
  • Establish an active education program to empower citizens to take positive action to improve water quality
  • Assist in the identification and solution to matters that affect water quality
  • Improve water quality monitoring with the watershed
  • Support the establishment of a Regional Sewer System for Grand Lake
  • Publish a Strategic Plan for the Foundation
  • Energize watershed stakeholders to participate in matters affecting their watershed
  • Support and assist in the creation of a four-state Watershed Commission that will serve as a forum for the Governors of the four watershed states to achieve agreement to specific water quality improvement measures
  • Energize and coordinate private funding necessary to assist in the preservation protection and improvement of water quality within the watershed
  • Create a Foundation organization that has sufficient funding and staffing to achieve a sustained and positive impact on water quality
