The Elk River Watershed Improvement Association [ERWIA.com] is an organization dedicated to the improvement of water quality on the Elk River. The Elk River is a tributary river flowing into Grand Lake O' The Cherokees. Waters drain into the Elk River watershed from parts of Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
In 1998, The Missouri Department of Resources identified the Elk River to be impaired primarily due to excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen). The Elk River Watershed Improvement Association focuses on measures designed to improve water quality.
According to the Association, stresses are thought to be placed on Elk River watershed water quality due to population growth and livestock production.
SPRING RIVER WATERSHED RESTORATION AND PROTECTION STRATEGY
The Spring River begins in southwest Missouri and flows through Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The Spring River Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) is organizing to focus on the Kansas portion of the Spring River watershed. Contact Crystal Eisele or Jim Triplett. A watershed group in the Northwest Arkansas area which includes part of the Elk River basin that flows into Grand Lake O' The Cherokees. Contact Chairman Jim Gately.
GRAND LAKE WATER WATCH INC.
Grand Lake Water Watch Inc. is a citizen-based water-monitoring group. Since 1992, trained and certified water monitor volunteers periodically perform tests of water quality in Grand Lake at in water sites and at lakeshore sites.
